The newly founded organizations English Pitch and Putt and Association Suisse de Pitch and Putt are looking for growth and development in their respective countries.

The meeting began with a Pitch and Putt competition for the Executive Committee members, Committee members from Competition and Communication as well as Juan Redondo from Madrid Golf Federation Pitch and Putt committee. Juan Redondo was the winner on 59, followed by Elia Casali and Alvaro Garnica, both on 60.

Angel Boix was elected as the new Treasurer treasurer@i-pp-a.org and Mr Alvaro Garnica Sainz de los Terreros as the new legal advisor of IPPA, both members of the Executive Committee.

Among many issues, the meeting approved the Strategic Plan for 2010 – 2013, with its four cornerstones: vision, mission, values and players. The objectives, key strategies and major goals were also unanimously approved.

The Competition Calendar for 2010 will be published during December, the first tournament being the IPPA World Invitational in Valencia, Spain, on 26 and 27 March.

Finally, the meeting agreed on the importance of focusing on the player’s requirements and that R&A rules of Golf should apply to IPPA tournaments, except for the distances and number of clubs.

During the meeting, Mr. Gonzaga Escauriaza, President of EGA, came to greet the Executive Committee and he confirmed his support to IPPA and our initiatives.

The sport of golf has been voted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Olympic Games.
After a pause of 105 years golf is again an Olympic sport. Last time golf was played was at the Games in 1900 in Paris and in 1904 in St Louis.
Format of the golf competition for the Games proposed by the International Golf Federation (IGF): eight-day competition (four for men and four for women) with 60 men and 60 women. Both men and women play 72 holes of stroke play, 18 holes per day. Medals will be awarded to the three competitors with the lowest total score.
IPPA wishes to reiterate its desire of collaborating with international golf organizations.

The Academy was inaugurated on 5th September, at Cantanhede, a city situated about 20 kms off the strategic triangle built by the old Coimbra university city, the beach city of Figueira da Foz, a very popular place until the beginning of the XXth century by the Madrid bourgeoisie and that of the City of Aveiro, also named the “Portuguese Venice”.

The teaching area has a driving range with 10 boxes, a pitching-green and a putting-green with about 600 m2.

The training and competition area has a nine hole P&P, in accordance with IPPA standards.

The greens at the Academy are covered by synthetic grass, this having lower maintenance costs, being the first golf infrastructure in the country using that technical option.

The P&P field has thirteen tees with a different type of artificial turf different from the one used in the greens, allowing the use of the balls supporting tees.

The Academy is part of the Cantanhede Sportive Complex, which has three soccer fields and a bicycle track, located about three minutes by car from the center of the city, easily accessed by bicycle or public transport, next to the Biocant Park – International Center of Biotechnology.

The Municipality of Cantanhede decide to build a P&P course, to better answer the wish of having a golf complex used by all the population of the County, independently of age and/or their social economical conditions.

The 1st Danish Open of Pitch and Putt was a great success not only for the organisers but also for local players with Nivaa’s Soren Schultze Pettersson and Anne Seiero winning the mens and womens divisions respectively.
The competition was played in very tough conditions, especially on the Saturday with strong winds and rain.

Mário Filipe wins convincingly

Mário Filipe was the winner of the National Mid-Amateur Championship of Pitch & Putt, held last weekend in Quinta das Lágrimas in Coimbra. With a total of 11 under par, he defeated runner up, Arnaldo Paredes, by seven shots.

Mário Filipe won in the category I National Championship Mid-Amateur for Pitch & Putt tournament, played on the nine hole course at the Academy of Golf Quinta das Lágrimas in Coimbra, and restricted to golfers over 35. Playing on his home course, this 54 year old professor of Physical Education, shot a 97 (48-49), to be 11 under par-54.

Mr. Paredes was the runner-up, with 104 (54-50), immediately followed by Ilídio Oliveira, with 106 (52-54). Both of them played with Reinaldo Timóteo (53-54), who finished fourth, in a very interesting battle for second place. The competition was played over two rounds of 18 holes with 31 players participating, the majority from the Quinta das Lágrimas course.

“I am very proud, I was very happy, and it is the result of training and dedication to the sport,” said Mário Filipe the Press Office of the FPG. “In due course, I combine the technical and psychological aspects, or on Saturday or Sunday,” he added.

“With excellent facilities, the Quinta das Lágrimas course has many good players, and it went well. I also had the help of a caddy, Hugo Espirito Santo, who is the national champion of pitch & putt. He helped me, “acknowledges Mário Filipe, a 11.1 handicap in conventional golf.

Hugo Espirito, who in April I won the National Championship of Pitch & Putt in Porto Santo, could not participate because he is only 29 years old. Vicente Gouveia, the runner up national champion, was placed sixth in Mid-Amateur, with 112 (55-57). António Poeira occupied the fifth position with 110 (51-59).

Pitch & Putt is a specialty of golf that has been gaining more members and in which the FPG are getting stronger. It is played on short Par 3 courses, with the same rules as golf, although with some exceptions.

The length of these courses may not exceed 1,200 meters and each hole should not exceed 90 meters. The number of clubs allowed in the bag is three, including the ‘putter’. The tee area and the ‘greens’ may be grass or synthetic. And the tee areas are common to all players, men, women and juniors.

Mário Filipe vence e convence

Mário Filipe foi o vencedor do I Campeonato Nacional Mid-Amateur de Pitch & Putt, realizado este fim-de-semana na Quinta das Lágrimas, em Coimbra. Com um total de 11 abaixo do par, deixou o vice-campeão, Arnaldo Paredes, a sete shots de distância.

Mário Filipe venceu de forma categórica o I Campeonato Nacional Mid-Amateur de Pitch & Putt, torneio que se jogou este fim-de-semana no campo de nove buracos da Academia de Golfe Quinta das Lágrimas, em Coimbra, restrito a golfistas a partir dos 35 anos. A jogar em casa, este professor da Educação Física, de 54 anos, totalizou 97 pancadas (48-49), 11 abaixo do par-54.

Arnaldo Paredes foi o vice-campeão, com 104 (54-50), logo seguido de Ilídio Oliveira, com 106 (52-54). Um e outro acabaram por protagonizar, juntamente com Reinaldo Timóteo (53-54), quarto classificado, a batalha mais interessante do torneio, na disputa pelo segundo lugar. A prova jogou-se em duas voltas de 18 buracos (9×2) e nela participaram 31 jogadores, sendo a maioria da própria Quinta das Lágrimas.

“É um orgulho bastante grande, fiquei muito satisfeito, mas também é fruto de treino e dedicação à modalidade”, disse Mário Filipe ao Gabinete de Imprensa da FPG. “Na altura certa, consegui conciliar as vertentes técnica e psicológica, quer no sábado, quer no domingo”, acrescentou.

“Não estava à espera de facilidades, a Quinta das Lágrimas tem muitos bons jogadores, mas correu bem. Também tive a ajuda de um caddie, o Hugo Espírito Santo, que é o campeão nacional de pitch & putt. Ajudou-me bastante”, reconhece Mário Filipe, um handicap 11.1 no golfe convencional.

Hugo Espírito, que em Abril conquistou o I Campeonato Nacional de Pitch & Putt, em Porto Santo, não pôde participar porque tem apenas 29 anos. Já Vicente Gouveia, o vice-campeão nacional, foi agora sexto classificado em Mid-Amateur, com 112 (55-57). António Poeira ocupou o quinto posto com 110 (51-59).

O P & P é uma especialidade do golfe que tem vindo a conquistar cada vez mais aderentes e na qual a FPG aposta forte. Joga-se em campos de par-3 muito curtos, com tacos e bolas idênticos aos do golfe e com as mesmas regras, ainda que com algumas excepções decorrentes das características destas infra-estruturas.

O comprimento destes campos não pode ser superior a 1.200 metros e cada buraco não deve exceder os 90 metros. O número de tacos permitidos no saco é quatro, incluindo o ‘putter’. Os pontos de partida, bem como os ‘greens’, podem ser em relva ou sintécticos. E os ‘tees’ são únicos para todos os jogadores, homens, senhoras e juniores.
