RIOM Pitch and Putt course, France
Situated on the outskirts of the historic town of Riom, fifteen kilometres north of the regional capital, Clermont-Ferrand, and close to the volcanic Auvergne mountain range, the Riom Pitch and Putt Course is part of a golfing complex comprising a driving range and a compact Par 3 golf course. The driving range has also a lighting system allowing for night time practice. Riom is the birthplace of Pitch and Putt in France as AFPP was founded here in 1999.
The course was established in 1992 and was extended from nine to eighteen holes in 2008. There are at present seven hundred members of the club and about 10% of these play Pitch and Putt competitively. Golf and Pitch and Putt competitions are held all year round as the climate is temperate. Access to the club could not be easier as it is located a few hundred metres from the Paris – Montpellier motorway.
The golf course is just over 2 000 metres in length with relatively small greens and the Pitch and Putt configuration, which has permanent teeing areas and which can be played at all times, is 1 200 metres long. The front nine, which includes a few uphill and downhill holes, has only one water hazard but water comes into play on all but two holes on the flat back nine. Almost all holes have at least one well-placed sand bunker. When the wind is blowing, which is about 300 days a year, it’s best to make sure you have a good supply of balls.

Men, women and children are equal members of the Club and all competitions are mixed events. The Golf School is attended by almost 100 children and some of the finest players in the region started playing here. Christian Rouvident, the club manager, and Paul Bonnichon, the club pro, provide tuition of the highest quality; under their expert guidance, the club can look forward to a promising future. Riom is a living example of the possibility for golf and Pitch and Putt to co-exist for the pleasure of all its members. Riom won the 2009 edition of LIPP, the French national interclub monthly Pitch and Putt medal event.

The club president, Jean-Louis Oleksiak, a prominent member of the AFPP international squad, holds the course record with a 51 which is an indication of the difficulty of the course. Now that it has 18 holes, Riom hopes to host major national and international events in 2010, so this record may not last for long.

The sport of golf has been voted by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) Session for inclusion in the programme of the 2016 Olympic Games.
After a pause of 105 years golf is again an Olympic sport. Last time golf was played was at the Games in 1900 in Paris and in 1904 in St Louis.
Format of the golf competition for the Games proposed by the International Golf Federation (IGF): eight-day competition (four for men and four for women) with 60 men and 60 women. Both men and women play 72 holes of stroke play, 18 holes per day. Medals will be awarded to the three competitors with the lowest total score.
IPPA wishes to reiterate its desire of collaborating with international golf organizations.

September has been a very busy month for Pitch & Putt in Spain. Among the different tournaments that the RFEG Pitch & Putt Committee organizes, there is one that feels special: our National Championship for Children up to 14 years old.
For the complete story on this event , please go to the full article.

IPA vice-President, Juan Antonio Martinez las Heras, with the prize winners.

Torrepacheco (Murcia) – the first public P&P course in Spain – was a privileged witness of how 70 boys and girls from all over the country have learned to enjoy this game without loosing the seriousness and continuous concentration that his practice requires – specially at high level standings… their innocent naturalness brought an easy smile to our faces… so cute!
… Yet, they were not the only ones. Two weeks later, our Senior National Championship was received by ladies and gentlemen over 50-55 years with great expectations. A combination of spa circuits and river tours by beautiful Cofrentes, a selective environment surrounded by mountains outside the health resort and a tiptop garden, rather than a course, made more than 50 players aware of the door that Pitch & Putt opens to play the game of golf in a different way: more relaxed, not so physical demanding, with plenty time to spare, yet with the competitive spirit we all look for.
…So they played and they enjoyed doing it. Both kids and big kids have learned the simplest of the lessons: in sport, in LIFE you have to be tough and work hard whichever you want to achieve… doing it smiling makes the big difference.
… Keep smiling!

The Municipal Golf Academy of Cantanhede is the first public golf infrastructure to open in Portugal and includes integrated teaching, training, competition areas, as well as a clubhouse.

The Academy was inaugurated on 5th September, at Cantanhede, a city situated about 20 kms off the strategic triangle built by the old Coimbra university city, the beach city of Figueira da Foz, a very popular place until the beginning of the XXth century by the Madrid bourgeoisie and that of the City of Aveiro, also named the “Portuguese Venice”.

The teaching area has a driving range with 10 boxes, a pitching-green and a putting-green with about 600 m2.

The training and competition area has a nine hole P&P, in accordance with IPPA standards.

The greens at the Academy are covered by synthetic grass, this having lower maintenance costs, being the first golf infrastructure in the country using that technical option.

The P&P field has thirteen tees with a different type of artificial turf different from the one used in the greens, allowing the use of the balls supporting tees.

The Academy is part of the Cantanhede Sportive Complex, which has three soccer fields and a bicycle track, located about three minutes by car from the center of the city, easily accessed by bicycle or public transport, next to the Biocant Park – International Center of Biotechnology.

The Municipality of Cantanhede decide to build a P&P course, to better answer the wish of having a golf complex used by all the population of the County, independently of age and/or their social economical conditions.

The IPPA webmaster interviewed John Hudson, President of IPPA shortly after the Italian Open:

IW: Was this competition a success? Does it deserve the title “Italian Open”?

IP: Yes, it was; yes, it does. From an organisational point of view, the team at Virginia Pitch and Putt club was well prepared and went to great lengths to ensure its success. From 6 in the morning till 11 at night, the ground staff, the office staff, the people in the kitchen and in the restaurant and all the voluntary helpers were available, helpful and always smiling. In the three days I was there, I never heard a cross word or a complaint of any kind.

IW: What about the standard of play?

IP: The scores may not seem outstanding but it is a demanding course which can soon turn nasty. Andrès Pastor’s opening 48 reflects a high degree of mastery and control. Under the pressure of the final round, he could only manage a 57 and just 3 players got round in par. It was good to have players from five different countries

IW: Is the course worthy of such an event?

IP: Being a 9 hole course makes it very difficult to run such an event. In every other respect, the course is a tip-top Pitch and Putt lay-out; it was beautifully prepared; and the two tee-boxes at least give the impression that you are playing 18 different holes. It poured with rain for 6 hours between midnight and 6 a.m. on Saturday morning and I arrived at 7 expecting to live another day like the one at La Grande Motte, which washed out a round of the World Championship. But no, we were able to tee off on time with just a few patches of occasional water, which dried out quickly.

IW: So the weather was not good?

IP, No, it was perfect; warm but not too sunny and with very little wind. Players and spectators had a great time.

IW: The high spots?

IP: Enrico’s sand save on the play-off hole which forced Andrès to sink a very tricky putt.
The look on Mark Fromings’ face when he received an autographed premier league football as best-placed junior. He also recorded the best score in Round 3.
Kissing a pretty blonde when asked to present the lady’s prize to Virginia of Virginia.
The gala dinner – Italian cuisine at its best + a wonderful atmosphere.
Excellent and convenient accommodation at a reasonable price. Etc, etc., etc. .

IW: The black spots?

IP: None at all. With events of this quality, IPPA has a bright future.

IW: What about IPPA’s future?

IP: Last week, we received official confirmation of our registration as an international sporting organisation. We can now start really making our presence felt in the world, especially in the golfing world. We have a meeting in Madrid in November to put the final touches to our strategic plan and we shall be making some important announcements. Watch this space!

The Golf Virginia is 15 miles from the city of Como, made famous by its lake, one of the most important and interesting places in the North of Italy, full of treasures of art, history and traditions, and it is for centuries an inexhaustible source of inspiration for poets and painters. Along the shores of the lake, characterized by green hills that slope gently into the water, man has built splendid examples of architecture.
Excellent place to visit to complete the marriage between golf and tourism.
